Breaking Free from a 30-Year Addiction
Recovery is a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and personal transformation. At Samaritan Way, we celebrate individuals who not only rebuild their lives but also give back to the community, inspiring others to stay strong in their recovery.
We’re highlighting Ken Miller, our January Participant of the Month. Ken’s story is one of resilience, faith, and the power of support systems. After 30 years of addiction, he has now been clean for 30 months, and today, he’s a lead volunteer at Samaritan Way, using his experience to help others find hope and healing.
The Road to Recovery: Finding a New Path
Like many struggling with addiction, Ken’s challenges began early in life. Growing up without stable family support and surrounded by negative influences, he found himself caught in a cycle of substance use.
But everything changed after a pivotal moment in prison. Upon his release, his ex-sister-in-law introduced him to Samaritan Way, and for the first time, he found himself surrounded by people who understood his struggles and believed in his recovery.
“Samaritan Way brought me to life.”

Support Systems: The Key to Long-Term Recovery
Recovery doesn’t happen alone. It requires a strong support network, and for Ken, that includes:
- Samaritan Way – A peer-driven recovery community where he finds encouragement and connection.
- His Daughter – A steady source of motivation and emotional support.
- Church Community – A place of faith, belonging, and spiritual strength.
These support systems have given Ken the stability and accountability needed to stay on track and continue growing in his recovery.
Giving Back: From Participant to Peer Supporter
Ken’s journey has come full circle. Today, he is a lead volunteer at Samaritan Way, where he:
- Helps maintain the facility, ensuring it remains a welcoming and safe space for others.
- Provides encouragement to new participants, sharing his personal experience to inspire hope.
- Acts as a role model for those in early recovery, demonstrating that lasting change is possible.
Ken describes Samaritan Way as “a family”—a place where those in recovery can find acceptance, connection, and purpose.
“We don’t always have family that sticks by us, but at Samaritan Way, we have each other.”
Advice for Those in Early Recovery
Ken’s message to those just starting their recovery journey is simple but powerful:
- Stay focused – Set goals and keep moving forward, even on tough days.
- Stay strong – Lean on your support systems and believe in yourself.
- Never give up – Recovery is possible, and every step forward is worth it.
“No matter how hard it gets, keep pushing forward. You are stronger than your struggles.”
